California Newborn Hearing Screening

Purchasing a hearing aid by mail order/internet may seem inexpensive, but there could be hidden costs.

California law provides that mail order/internet hearing aids may only be purchased through a dispenser licensed by the California Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board.
The law states that when hearing aids are purchased by mail order/internet there is no fitting, selection, or adaptation of the instrument.
By law, the seller may give no advice with respect to the taking of an ear impression (ear impressions are made to ensure the proper fit of a hearing aid).
The law also requires that, prior to purchasing a hearing aid through mail order or the internet, you must provide a statement signed by a California-licensed physician, audiologist, or hearing aid dispenser that verifies direct examination of your ear.

To work effectively, hearing aids must fit right. If a hearing aid transaction doesn't involve personal contact with a licensed dispenser, then you cannot benefit from a proper fitting.
Follow-up evaluation, which is important to ensure the hearing aid is working appropriately and meeting your needs, probably isn't available.
It may be difficult to get a refund from an out-of-state seller. According to California law, if a hearing aid is not initially fit for your particular needs, then it may be returned to the seller within 45 days of the initial date of delivery to you. If you return the hearing aid, then the seller will either adjust or replace the hearing aid, or promptly refund the total amount paid.

Engage exclusively with licensed hearing aid dispensers to ensure compliance with state-mandated consumer rights and safety standards. Ask the dispenser if they are licensed in California or check the Board's website to verify license status.
Review the terms and fine print carefully for limitations or conditions before signing a contract or purchase agreement.
